Fun with Furniture?
by Rob Dellamod

Furniture - Beds, tables, couches, dressers - these are the trappings of modern western life. By knowing a few key points, you can tell if that antique armoire in your bedroom is Tudor, Chippendale, or Queen Mary at a glance. Usually, the style of a piece was related to the monarch of the time, particularly when it comes to French and English antiques, the most prevalent type of truly antique furniture. Early American styles are also available, of course, and bear their own distinctive marks. Not surprisingly, the late Renaissance period is when furniture making started to be regarded as an art.

French furniture makers were at the forefront of technology during the reign of Louis 15. Although the Renaissance had started in Italy, by the time of the commissioning of the palace at Versailles it had taken on a decidedly French flair of its own in that country. The defining style of this period is the use of wood with carvings and no other decoration, and brass mountings which could be quite intricate. Flat cabinet surfaces and straight legs on tables and chairs were also notable characteristics. In the following periods, carvings and decorations became more elaborate, and furniture legs were often curved with sweeping arcs of wood.

In contrast, England at this time was mostly creating plain furniture made primarily from walnut. It was Charles the 2nd returning from exile who brought with him the idea of ornate furniture that could be decorative as well as functional. One of the most prominent features of this period is the cabriole leg. These usually had a pronounced knee towards the top, and had either a club or a claw and ball foot. As the English branched out into using new woods, they also began to experiment with lacquer and gilding. Carving was replaced with painting and other elaborate decoration.

Some of the most plentiful antiques you'll find are Victorian era. Queen Victoria identified with the middle class, which was rapidly expanding. Middle class families tended to have large families, and rooms filled to overflowing with couches and chairs. With the advent of the Industrial age, furniture started to be made in factories, and could be very cheaply made. In an ironic twist, handmade furniture was once again the vogue, only now not from necessity but from a need for a well made product. An innovation that had been meant to save time actually caused more effort.

Today people can buy furniture in almost any price range. Discount stores sell kits that allow you to build your own furniture at minimal expense. High end furniture stores sell hand made furniture that fills a room with luxury and style. In the middle are furniture stores that offer quality our products at affordable prices. Antique stores carry the beautiful old furniture from historical periods, steeped in culture. Whatever type you choose, your furniture reflects your personality in its style and design. It is one of the ways you can add the touches that make a house a home.
